Sunstone Counseling was created in 2011 by George Coyne, LCSW and Amy Stephens, LPC. George and Amy had previously been in private practice together with The Center for Well Being, PLLC, and decided to launch out on their own and build a practice based on their passion for providing the best personal counseling to individuals, couples, families and groups. George and Amy knew they would need an amazing team of counselors to help support their goal and invited Katie Clark, Cindy Walls, Jordi Izzard, Charlie Clark, Kristin Milotte, and Lori Lindsey White to join Sunstone Counseling.
You might wonder how we came up with our name. It was a group effort, actually. During our deliberation we came across a reading about sunstones and their legendary healing powers. We discovered that many different cultures placed tremendous value on a sunstone’s ability to improve numerous facets of one’s mental and emotional health. It was used to alleviate depression, anxiety, and to encourage independence, self-empowerment, confidence, and vitality. A sunstone was also believed to enhance one’s optimism and belief in self. Simply put, a sunstone embodied the power to create enormously positive benefits and attributes. Combined with its aura of warmth and strength, we believed it was the perfect representation of the kind of counseling practice we wanted to offer. We admit we don’t have a magic sunstone to make that happen, but we do have its mythic capabilities at the core of our counseling approach.
