Sunstone Counseling began in 2011 when co-owners Amy Clay, LPC, and George Coyne, LCSW, had a vision to serve the northern Virginia community’s mental health needs by providing comprehensive, accessible, and high-quality counseling services. In their quest to meet the community’s ever-changing and diverse needs, Amy and George also wanted to develop and nurture other counselors to create an experienced and dedicated team.
In 2018, Katie Clark, LPC, a trained play therapist, led the charge on serving the needs of children, adolescents, and families and helped open Sunstone’s third location in McLean. Since then, Sunstone Counseling has grown from a few therapists and one location to more than 60 therapists in three locations: City of Falls Church, McLean, and Old Town Alexandria, Loudoun, and new Richmond office coming soon! In 2020, the Sunstone team expanded even further, offering services to all of Virginia through virtual counseling – growing their reach to guide people to a brighter tomorrow.
Why the name “Sunstone”?
When Amy and George were starting the practice, they wanted the name to convey their approach to uplifting and guiding clients to a better and brighter life. Alongside their colleagues, they discovered the sunstone, a bright and colorful stone long believed to have healing and energetic properties and the ability to improve one’s mental and emotional health.
Sunstones have been used in some cultures to alleviate depression and anxiety, and to encourage independence, self-empowerment, confidence, and vitality. The Vikings even used it as a directional tool to guide them on challenging journeys. Additionally, the image of the warmth of the sun and the strength of the stone provided a perfect representation of their approach to counseling.
The Sunstone Team
While George, Amy, and Katie founded and hold Sunstone’s vision, they attribute much of Sunstone’s success in actualizing this vision to their team of experienced counselors and therapists with diverse backgrounds and expertise. For over 10 years Suntone has been providing the care and support to hundred of clients throughout Virginia to resolve issues and overcome their challenges during all ages and stages of life. Meet the experienced and compassionate team of Sunstone Counselors who provide general and specialized services to guide you to a brighter tomorrow.
