Question: Where are you located?
Answer: We have two locations conveniently in the heart of the City of Falls Church and Old Town Alexandria.

Sunstone Counseling is located just five miles from downtown Washington, D.C., and within three miles of most major areas of Arlington and Fairfax Counties.

Question: What are your hours?
Answer: Sunstone Counseling is open every day of the week and we have counselors available to work with you early morning, day, evenings and night.

Question: How often should I expect to come to counseling?
Answer: When scheduling your first appointment or at your first session, you and your counselor will discuss what makes the most sense for you. With that said, we usually recommend that clients start by coming for a minimum of one 55-minute session, per week.  For couples counseling we often recommend a 90-minute session. Clients can choose to stay in counseling for as long as it makes sense for them. We work with clients on the specific issues or problems that they would initially like to address, assess progress, and explore whether there are any other areas on which you’d like to work. If not, and you believe your original goals have been achieved, your counseling ends. However, we want you to know that there is always an open door to return if ever needed.  We have heard from many clients that they are happy they have an established relationship with a counselor so they can call on if a need arises.

Question: Do you take insurance?
Answer: No we do not, but our intern and resident counselors do offer a lower rate than those charged by a typical therapist. Also, if you choose to work with one of our licensed counselors, they will always offer a receipt for and explanation of services that you may submit to your insurance company for consideration for reimbursement. (note: Every insurance company handles reimbursement differently and it will be incumbent on the client to facilitate this process with their respective insurance company).

Question: What are your rates for each counseling session?
Answer: Therapists working at Sunstone Counseling offer a range of rates from $50 to $245 per hour for individuals, couples, group or family counseling sessions. Rates vary depending on the therapist (and level of training), length of session and type of session (e.g. individual, group, etc.).  Please click on the therapist’s bio for more information about their rates.

Question: How can I pay for my counseling services?
Answer: You will pay your counselor directly at the time of your appointment.

Clients may pay by cash, check or credit card (MasterCard, Visa and Discover). We have a 48- hour cancellation policy and will need to charge a full session fee if a client does not contact their counselor by phone or email with advance notice.

Question: Do therapists at Sunstone Counseling prescribe medication?
Answer: No, but we will make referrals to an appropriate doctor or psychiatrist if we determine medication could be helpful.

Question: Who are your therapists and how do I know who would be the best fit for me?
Answer: Finding the right counselor for you is a very important part of the counseling process.  Please read all of our client biographies to get a feel for who might work best with you.  Fill free to directly send them an email or call to set up your first appointment.  If you’re undecided about whom to choose, email and we will promptly get back to you to help you select one of our expert counselors.

Confidentiality and Mind Body

Sunstone Counseling is required by law to maintain the privacy of your PHI and to provide you with this notice of privacy practices. We are required to abide by the privacy policies and practices that are outlined in this notice.  All members of our staff are under contract to respect your confidentiality and privacy as outlined in this notice.  Similarly, any of our business associates who have contact with your PHI (such as a third party billing company) are obligated to respect your confidentiality and privacy in accordance with this notice.  For security, your files are maintained and protected in a locked cabinet when not in use.  As permitted by law, we reserve the right to amend or modify our privacy policies and practices and the changes will apply to all information we have about you.  These changes in our policies and practices may be required by changes in federal and state laws and regulations.  Any updated notice will be available at our office, upon request, and on our website .
